Roma have opened talks with Florentino Luis’ representatives as they weigh a move for the Benfica midfielder, signalling their first concrete step in a potential summer transfer. The Italian side met with the player’s agent to better understand Benfica’s stance and the conditions required for a deal to materialize.
Discussions focused on both Luis’ willingness to consider a transfer and Benfica’s financial demands. According to Italian journalist Filippo Biafora, the Portuguese club is holding out for €25 million to part with the 25-year-old defensive midfielder. For Roma, who are actively reshaping their squad, the fee could prove a major hurdle unless space is freed in their midfield.
Coach Gian Piero Gasperini has identified Luis as a strong candidate to reinforce his options. Together with sporting director Frederic Massara and other key decision-makers, he has been reviewing profiles that could deliver defensive stability.
Luis is considered particularly valuable for his ability to shield the back line and disrupt opponents’ attacks. Nonetheless, any signing would hinge on player departures to balance both squad dynamics and financial considerations.

Rivals circle with competing offers
Roma are not alone in their pursuit. Across Europe, several clubs are tracking Luis’ situation, intensifying competition as the transfer window winds down. Marseille already tabled an offer, though it was dismissed by Benfica. The French club may return with a new bid, particularly if they manage midfield exits to create room for signings.
Championship side Burnley are also monitoring the midfielder closely. While long interested, they have yet to submit a formal offer, preferring instead to outline conditions and explore feasibility. Their approach suggests admiration rather than immediate action.
Meanwhile, Premier League outfits Leeds United and Everton have also expressed interest. Everton see Luis as a possible successor to the experienced Idrissa Gueye, and reports indicate Benfica might entertain a reduced price of around €17 million for certain clubs, an adjustment that could reshape negotiations.
Luis’ career has been defined by resilience. After emerging from Benfica’s academy, he initially struggled for consistent minutes and sharpened his skills during loan spells at AS Monaco and Getafe. Returning to Lisbon, he grew into a regular contributor, making over 150 appearances and earning a reputation as a ball-winner with smart positional sense and the vision to launch counters.

Yet, Benfica’s recent additions in midfield have left his future less certain. With his contract still running for two more years, the club appears willing to sanction his exit if their valuation is matched. Past offers from England and Saudi Arabia have already been turned down, while inquiries from Turkey and Italy continue to circulate.
Fabrizio Romano has even described Luis as Roma’s “dream signing.” Still, he warned that Benfica’s high demands, coupled with mounting competition from English clubs, significantly complicate matters.
