MGM College’s Eco Club held a debate on 30 August titled “Should We Ban Single-Use Plastic Completely?” at the college auditorium, drawing energetic participation from students on both sides of the motion, according to a press release shared by the organisers.
The session opened with a welcome by convener Christine Murry, who encouraged participants with motivating remarks before the discussion commenced, the release noted.
Arguments supporting a complete ban focussed on the environmental toll of plastic, including pollution of land and water bodies, threats to wildlife, and risks of long-term ecological imbalance, the organisers said.
Pro-ban speakers also framed the shift to sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives as a moral responsibility to future generations, according to the release.

Opposing speakers emphasised the convenience and affordability of plastics and the employment associated with plastic manufacturing, the press note stated. They advocated gradual reduction, efficient recycling, and stricter regulation in place of an outright prohibition, pointing to potential socio-economic consequences of a complete ban, the organisers reported.
Judges declared the team speaking for the motion, represented by Tunali, Alex, and Tokupu, the winners after a lively and engaging exchange that kept the audience involved throughout, the release added.
The Eco Club said the event highlighted student oratory whilst fostering critical thinking and awareness of individual and collective responsibility in addressing plastic pollution.
